Ralph & Ava's

Posted on 05:58 by kajal singh
Staff Reporter Rowan Gast-Bray
There is a homey hole in the wall sandwich place that has slipped under the radar of too many people. Ralph and Ava’s is a small restaurant located on Main Street in downtown Mooresville, just two shops down from Tri County Sports. When walking in, your first impression is that you have stumbled into a stranger’s living room by accident. Once you push on, the room is adorned with local art and mismatched chairs and tables. However, you are welcomed by a competent staff. You are presented a menu with a wide array of wraps, soups and sandwiches, all for under eight dollars. There are many vegetarian offerings in addition to the carnivorous sandwiches piled high with lunch meat. I chose the pretzel melt, a buttery pretzel bread concoction with your choice of cheese and meat. That was undeniably scrumptious and brought out in less than ten minutes. In short, Ralph and Ava’s has great food, great atmosphere and terrific prices. This place does not deserve to be passed by and would be a great after-school hangout. Try them out on Thursdays for trivia night. Test your knowledge for prizes. Ralph & Ava's

Spanish Cafe

Posted on 05:48 by kajal singh
This year's Spanish Cafe was held in the gym lobby.

The Spanish IV class put in hours of planning and preparation. Senior Erica Tharp, whose favorite Spanish word is montequilla de cacahuates, believes "planning and team work are very important" in staging the cafe.

Sophomore Cody Hunter thought "the chips and salsa are great."

Senora Dilley said, "Setting up is very stressful, so the day of the cafe is probably my favorite part."

Posted on 11:19 by kajal singh
Staff Reporter Ethan Rupert
Monrovia’s John Bennett spoke with us about his “new age rock band” called Basement of Memories. While John plays many instruments, he specializes in guitar, drums, and trumpet. The band has four members and mostly plays originals, but they have also covered Nirvana. John has played music for nine years. He said most of his inspiration has come from local bands. John does not want to play music as a full-time career, but he does plan on going to school for music production.

·        The MHS SADD Club 2013 Safe Halloween event hosted approximately 500 children, distributed over 100 bags of candy, and handed out hundreds of anti-bullying and anti-drug flyers and giveaways to families.  We also collected approximately 25 bags of donated goods for Churches in Mission.

Junior Film Series

Posted on 11:07 by kajal singh
Contributing Reporter Allysen Brown
The MHS English 11 Honors and the Advanced Placement US History classes work in conjunction with one another. Mrs. Phillips and Mr. Reeder have put together a movie series that reflects what is being taught in the classes. There is a movie night for these students each nine weeks.
The first movie that the classes watched was The Last of the Mohicans. This movie complemented the assigned class book, The Deerslayer. The next movie, to be shown at the end of October, will be The Dead Poets Society. This film will be shown to highlight transcendentalism. A total of 40 out of 55 students came to the first movie night.
Mrs. Phillips was very pleased with how many students gave up their night to come together as a class to watch the movie. Mrs. Phillips said, “ Mr. Reeder and I thought movie night was a perfect way to make lecture and written word come to life.”
Mr. Reeder was glad that he was doing a movie night again, and thought that it went very well. He also feels that having a movie night is good because it can cover material that they would not have time to explore in depth in class. Mr. Reeder said, “ This shows the benefits of interdisciplinary learning.”
Students were also asked their feelings on the movie night. Trevor Eisenhut said, “It was fun and an overall good experience.” Zach Boles felt the same, but said “It was a hassle getting here from practice and then getting home late.” Gabi Ritter thought that the movie night was cute because everyone was together and said, “The movie helped put a face to what I was reading.”
Overall, the first movie night was a success. There were some scheduling issues and differing opinions on whether or not it helped to understand the reading. However, everyone enjoyed the experience and is looking forward to the next film.
